Mom and Dad, Will this Violence Ever Stop? Interventions for Young People
With Sexual Behavior Problems and Their Families


Exposure to domestic violence and child neglect are common traumas experienced by young people who sexually harm others, yet are seldom a focus of their treatment. This presentation focuses on the dynamics of chronic neglect, exposure to domestic violence, and sexual abuse as risk factors for young people to engage in sexually harmful behaviors. Topics to be addressed include:

• Applying the Trauma Outcome Process Assessment (TOPA) model to youth and families impacted by neglect, domestic violence, and sexual abuse.
• Strategies for interviewing young people with sexual behavior problems and their families.
• Treatment strategies for deterring violence, improving attachment, and increasing intimacy in violent and abusive families.

Participants are encouraged to bring cases for case discussion. They will learn specific strategies and techniques to help them better assess and intervene with young people with sexual behavior problems and their families.
