אודות Marcus Benayon

My name is Dr. Marcus Benayon and I'm a developmental psychologist at the University of Toronto, Ontario Canada. My research interests are in developmental and cross-cultural psychology, especially the development of identity and Jewish gay fathering. In addition, during the past two years I was granted unprecedented access to various ultra orthodox Jewish communities in Toronto assessing their educational systems and social infrastructure. My PhD work was focused on the community’s growing psychoeducational challenges due to high incidents of developmental and/or emotional disorders among children between the ages of 6-14 years old. Acceptable tools of assessment used by developmental psychologist in western societies were, at best, insufficient, requiring us to develop new tools to assess various developmental delays and other psychological issues ailing this specific cultural group.

In addition to my interest in cross-cultural psychology, I had the privilege to work with Dr. Wayne Martino a senior professor at the University of Western Ontario and world-renowned researcher on gender issues in education and boys’ overall academic performance in schools. I conducted research, once again with developmental and cross-cultural psychology components, examining the newly emerging phenomenon of gay Jewish men who raise children both in Israel and Canada. I included the chapter I contributed to Dr. Martino’s book discussing two cases (out of ten), one in Israel and one in Canada, of Jewish men who are raising children in a same-sex relationship and somewhat within the Jewish faith.
