The house no longer recognizes us
Strangers, strangers-
O our village, we have become strangers to you.
We pass by your road and cannot enter you.
Has the rain visited you?
What does it smell like on your soil?
How do the winds sound-
do their voices knock on your door,
warning of escape to a place warmer and safer?
Has a stranger visited you in our absence?
Was he a guest,
or an enemy?
Did you miss your people-
their laughter, their voices, their days,
their dreams whose horizon was the sky
despite the chains?
Did you open the door to strangers?
Did a lover come,
weeping for your people?
How does the sunrise look
through your broken window?
Did you see the threads of sunlight?
We play sorrow on its strings.
Are our names still carved into your walls?
They were etched with the innocence of childhood,
dreaming of dying
within you.
My name is Alia Mleihat, I am 28 years old, and I am a master’s student specializing in Security and Civil Peace. I was born and raised in Al-Mu’arrajat village, located northwest of Jericho, where I lived a Bedouin life filled with simplicity, freedom, and safety. However, this reality changed when my village was subjected to repeated attacks by settlers and the establishment of a nearby pastoral settlement outpost, which became a direct threat to our lives and stability.
As a free Palestinian woman deeply attached to my land, I took responsibility for documenting settlers’ violations and conveying the suffering of my village’s residents to the world through local and international interviews. I also participated in several documentary projects, including a film with Oxfam and another film in which I was the main subject of the story.
I continued defending our right to our land and our right to live safely, despite the heavy price I paid. My village was lost, and my home was demolished, leaving me displaced and living in a tent in an area lacking the most basic necessities of life, including education, healthcare, and access to clean drinking water.
In addition, settlers continued to pursue us, attacking us and our children and threatening us with forced displacement. Despite all of this, I still believe in our children’s right to live in peace and safety, and to have access to education, healthcare, and decent shelter — fundamental human rights that can never be taken away.
